Like you, we are deeply concerned and want to do what we can to help keep our employees, labour-hire workers, candidates, clients, and their families and communities, safe and healthy during this time of uncertainty.
Therefore, Drake International continues to monitor the global COVID-19 situation and are working through what that means for our business in this ever-changing landscape and ensure we maintain several precautionary measures and everyone remains vigilant to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Australia is now coming out of the second COVID wave and restrictions are easing, with the most impacted states (Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia) are starting to return to a ‘post COVID’ normal. Borders have now reopened, more air travel permitted and business in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide starting to re-open are all positive signed for the economy and lifestyle activities returning for the Australian population.
Australia is now heading into the Summer months, meaning the current COVID situation should remain largely unchanged, however we cannot become complacent and believe this virus have been eradicated.
As seen overseas, as Australia moves into the winter months from March/April, there is a real possibility another COVID-19 wave could occur again early to mid 2021.

There are several precautionary measures that you can take, to protect the health and safety of yourself, your family, and the wider community, including:
Regularly and thoroughly cleaning your hands with warm, soapy water helps kill viruses that may be on your hands. Using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser in between hand washing also helps prevent the virus spreading.
Maintaining at least 1.5 metres between yourself and others prevents the spreading of the virus, especially where someone is coughing or sneezing. The COVID-19 virus can easily spread in small liquid droplets, which may not be seen.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth:
The COVID-19 virus can survive on any surface and if touched, can transfer to your hands and then to your face. This can result in the virus entering your body and making you sick.
Practice respiratory hygiene:
Everyone practicing good respiratory hygiene (including covering your mouth with your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing), is another good way of preventing the virus spreading. Where a tissue is used for this purpose, dispose of the tissue immediately.
Wearing face masks:
Wearing face masks is still mandatory in some states, however face masks do offer protection in preventing the spread of the virus and should be considered in other states as well.
If you are unwell, stay at home:
If you experience any Flu-Like symptoms, including runny nose, coughing, fever, sore throat, seek medical attention and stay at home. You will also need to undergo a COVID test, before being permitted to return to the workplace. This measure is designed to minimise the spread of the virus at the workplace and protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of everyone.
If you have had a COVID test:
If you have undergone a COVID test, you must self-isolate at home, until at least your test results have been received and your symptoms have resolved. The COVID test results are currently being returned within 24-48 hours. For more information regarding COVID-19 – refer to your state’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

What is Drake doing about COVID-19?
At Drake International, has been very active to implement various controls to keep everyone as safe as possible.
- Drake staff are now returning to the local offices and getting back to business as usual.
- Drake will continue to register our candidates remotely, via the online registration platform.
- Adjusting the COVID-19 risk profile, to reflect the easing of restrictions and reduced cases.
- We continue to require all employees and labour-hire workers to follow a strict self-isolation procedure, for anyone who is a risk and are asking all team members to avoid all non-essential activities outside of work.
- We have briefed employees, labour-hire workers, candidates, and visitors on the importance of frequent hand washing and social distancing and have increased the availability of hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes to maintain proper hygiene in all Drake locations across Australia.
- We are following all Federal and State Government guidelines and acting as ambassadors to communicate that information.
Drake Australia Pty Ltd, as part of its business continuity planning, has established a COVID Response Plan to address the risks associated with Coronavirus (COVID-19). This plan has been developed in consultation with the DHHS and SafeWork Australia.
The plan’s purpose is to:
- Provide service and business continuity during any COVID-19 outbreak.
- Identify all risks and mitigation strategies.
- Reduce the risk of the emergence/spread of a potential COVID-19 outbreak at our service to the extent that this is possible.
- Provide reassurance to staff and clients that key risks are being addressed.

What if I test positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
Do not report to work if you are on an assignment or a project. Call your local Drake Branch immediately and let us know you have tested positive for COVID-19. What if I may have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19?
Please contact your local Drake office immediately on 13 14 48 and tell your recruitment consultant that you believe you've been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Drake will advise to self-quarantine immediately. Drake will inform the client immediately. Drake will inform every other casual worker on site and advise to self-quarantine until further notice. The casual should not attend the Drake offices or client sites until their self-isolation period is over and have not developed any symptoms.

Drake Australia is not eligible for the Government’s ‘Job Keeper’ program, therefore if you are financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, your may be eligible for Job Seeker payments or other financial support options. You will need to contact your local Centrelink office for further advice or assistance
What if I've taken a personal trip or vacation and travelled to or from another country, should I inform Drake or the client?
If you've recently travelled anywhere outside of Australia or interstate or to a Covid hotspot, contact your Drake office or recruitment consultant immediately. You are likely to be required to self-isolate for 14 days depending on where you have travelled.
The company that I am on assignment with may be closing its doors for an extended period of time due to COVID-19. How will my pay be affected?
If the company you are assigned to closes its business, your assignment will cease. Contact your Drake office for other work opportunities.
I am in self-isolation for 14 days due to travel/coming into contact with someone who has travelled. How will my pay be affected?
Depending on whether your job allows you to work remotely, this situation will impact your pay. Casuals previously were entitled to the Sickness Allowance under Centrelink if they were ill or forced to isolate due to Coronavirus but this ceased on 20 March 2020. Sickness Allowance has now been replaced by Jobseeker Allowance. This applies to casual employees who are unable to attend work due to Coronavirus.

If the government decides to shut down my town or due to the Coronavirus will I still get paid by Drake International?
We will work with you to try and find another assignment or project, based on our clients’ work requirements and your availability.
Can staff be required to attend work even if they would prefer to work from home?
Casuals can work at their discretion. If a staff member has accepted shifts from Drake, however, then they are required to attend unless they can show evidence of being ill or unless they’re on unpaid carer’s leave tending to a sick family member.
Who needs to wear a mask?
- From 11:59pm on Sunday 6 December 2020, in Victoria you must continue to always carry a face mask with you when you leave the home, unless you have a lawful reason not to. This is in case you require your face mask, for example, if you aren’t able to keep 1.5 metres distance from other people.
- Face masks are mandatory on public transport and when in taxis or ride share vehicles (i.e. Taxi, Uber) in Victoria, however is recommended in all states.
- Face masks should also be worn when inside shopping centres, including the retail stores inside the shopping centres, and large retail stores such as department stores, electronics stores, furniture stores, hardware stores or supermarkets.
- It is strongly recommended that you wear a face mask in other situations when you are unable to stay more than 1.5 metres from other people, such as transport stops, busy walkways, and shops.
- Some industries, such as care facilities and ports, require the wearing of face masks as part of their COVIDSafe plan.
- In situations where you must wear a mask, you must wear a fitted face mask that covers the nose and mouth. This means that face shields, bandanas or scarves or loose snoods, or loose neck gaiters on their own will no longer be considered a sufficient face covering.
- A face mask with three layers is the option recommended by the Chief Health Officer, as it provides the best protection for you and others.
Where do I get a face mask?
You can purchase cloth masks or surgical masks from retail outlets including chemists, hardware stores and other shops or you can follow our directions to make your own cloth mask.
What are the different types of face masks and which one should I use?
The term ‘face mask’ includes cloth masks and single-use face masks (commonly called surgical masks). Both masks are suitable for use to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Cloth masks are any nose and mouth covering made of washable fabric. We recommend a cloth mask made of three layers of a mix of breathable fabrics to ensure adequate protection. It does not need to be surgical quality to be effective.
Surgical masks are made with a non-woven meltblown polypropylene layer and available in various levels of protection. These are single use masks only so can’t be washed and used again.
There are other types of masks and respirators (such as P2 or N95). These are not recommended for use in the community and not advised to be used outside of healthcare or specific industries under health advice.
A scarf or bandana does not offer the same amount of protection as well-fitted face masks. This is due to the type of fabrics they are made from. Properly constructed cloth masks are made from at least three layers of materials, including a water-resistant outer layer.
How do I wear a mask correctly?
A cloth mask should fit securely around the face, specifically covering the nose and the mouth areas. The mask should fit snugly on your face and be secured by ties at the back of your head or ear loops. If you are using a mask with ear loops, you can use a plastic clip or tie to join the ends together at the back of your head to make sure it fits snugly on your face.
Make sure that your mask does not have holes or a valve. This can result in breathing out the virus if you have coronavirus (COVID-19).
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or use hand sanitiser that is made up of over 60% alcohol before putting it on and after taking it off. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times and store used face masks in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them.
Surgical mask (single use)
- Before putting on the mask, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or use a hand sanitiser that is made up of over 60% alcohol.
- Check for defects in the mask, such as tears or broken loops.
- Position the coloured side of the mask outward.
- If present, make sure the metallic strip is at the top of the mask and positioned against the bridge of your nose.
- If the mask has:
- Ear loops: Hold the mask by both ear loops and place one loop over each ear.
- Ties: Hold the mask by the upper strings. Tie the upper strings in a secure bow near the crown of your head. Tie the bottom strings securely in a bow near the nape of your neck.
- Dual elastic bands: Pull the bottom band over your head and position it against the nape of your neck. Pull the top band over your head and position it against the crown of your head
- Mould the bendable metallic upper strip to the shape of your nose by pinching and pressing down on it with your fingers.
- Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin.
- Be sure the mask fits snugly.
- Don’t touch the mask once in position.
- If the mask gets soiled or damp, replace it with a new one.
When is it safe to take my face mask off?
You can remove it outside, once you are away from other people, or in your car on your way home. If it is a cloth mask, don’t forget to bring your cloth mask inside to be cleaned. If you wait to take your cloth mask off until you have returned home, it may be easier to put it directly into the laundry.
What’s the best way to take off a face mask?
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser containing at least 60% alcohol.
- Don’t touch the front of the mask or your face.
- Carefully remove your mask by grasping the ear loops or untying the ties. For masks with a pair of ties, unfasten the bottom one first, then the top one.
- If your mask has filters, remove them and throw them away. Fold the mask and put it directly into the laundry or into a disposable or washable bag for laundering. Single use surgical masks should be disposed of responsibly.
- Clean your hands again.
Can I reuse my face mask?
A cloth mask can be washed and re-used. It is a good idea to have at least two, so you always have a clean one available.
When leaving home, there might be times when you can’t maintain 1.5 metres distance from other people and wear a cloth mask, and times when you can maintain the distance and don’t need to wear a cloth mask. For instance, you might take crowded public transport to and from work, but at work be able to maintain appropriate distancing. Don’t reuse the same cloth mask to go home that you used earlier on the same trip to go to work. Put each used cloth mask into a zip lock bag to be taken home for washing. For each new situation put on a clean cloth mask.
Carry a paper bag or zip lock bag with you to carry clean masks and keep them clean.
Single use masks are for single-use only and should be disposed of responsibly in the rubbish bin.
